class=\"slide-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"content\">\n<p>Yesterday we visited the Khanqah Shah-i-Hamadan Mosque, built in the 1730\u2019s, just as prayers were called and all the local people came streaming in from the street.\u00a0 It\u2019s Ramadan, and this permeates everything we do here \u2026 hal-way through a transaction or a conversation, watches will be consulted and people will excuse themselves and jump in the car to get to the local mosque.<\/p>\n<p>This mosque is an astoundingly beautiful place, and like all the mosques we have visited, very welcoming.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t go inside during prayers but were invited to look through the window and take pictures.\u00a0 The front and interiors are covered in papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 reliefs and elaborately coloured khatamband\u00a0(faceted wood panelling). \u00a0The building stands on the site of one of Kashmir\u2019s first mosques, founded by Persian saint Mir Sayed Ali Hamadani who\u00a0arrived in 1372, one of 700 refugees fleeing Timur\u2019s conquest of Iran.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday we visited the Khanqah Shah-i-Hamadan Mosque, built
